The N&O sacked dozens of newsroom staffmembers today as parent company McClatchy wrestled with sagging revenues. There had been rumors that this would happen, so hopefully those affected had time to prepare.
When I open my paper, I typically go straight for the City and State section. Or the Business section if Kelly’s already snagged the C&S. The signal-to-noise ratio of the front section is often skewed heavily towards advertisements, and even then it doesn’t tell me anything that I didn’t learn 18 hours earlier on the web.
These cuts just show that the focus of corporate newspapers is all wrong: news positions got cut while ad positions remained. In-depth, local news is the only reason I read the paper (well, also to see what outlandish thing Barry Saunders will write next). I don’t see how these moves will improve the paper.
I hope things get better, though, because I’d really miss my paper. I realized during my
Raleigh Neighborhood College class that the reason I’m so well-informed on city happenings is due to my reading the News and Observer.
well, dude…as much as I’d like to agree with you about the paper I just can’t.
I actually don’t like keeping up with the local, state or national news. You or anyone else can say that its a way to keep informed but I think all outlets are biased and crap. They sensationalize everything and angle the stories to sell. It sucks….so, I don’t read, watch or even surf for the news and I’m happier for it. You should try it! I think you’d be pleasantly surprised how much it doesn’t really affect you. Peace!
Ignorance is bliss, eh? I’d prefer to stay informed. And I’m a big enough boy to figure out when something is biased.
I’m glad you feel that way but I’ve been a news junkie all my life and don’t expect that to change anytime soon!
