Misleading

Today’s News and Observer headline story about Mary Easley’s so-called pay raise may be the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as my being an N&O subscriber goes. I have no great love for the Easleys but the only way to describe this is overblown if not downright misleading.

Mary Easley is an accomplished lawyer in her own right. She lectures at NCSU and she recently went from part-time to full-time there. Her salary, while quite large from my point of view, is a pittance to what most attorneys earn. The N&O is twisting the facts. I can’t hep but think its punitive after the governor ducked out on an N&O reporter and his email deletion policy came to light.

Trust is critical to any news source; lose it and its gone for good. I have been an avid newspaper reader since I learned to read but that’s about to end. Unless the News and Observer cleans up its act pronto, it will find itself with one fewer subscriber. At least.

  1. By contrast read the Richmond paper. All the news that has been written by someone else. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had folks in India writing the copy from press releases and internet news sources…

  2. I’m gonna have to disagree with you on the article. Dude, they start off pointing out that she got a raise, she has new responsibilities and that its a position change.

They then talk to some critics and get their opinion of the situation. Finally, they wrap it up by getting the chancellors take, her take and gov easley’s take. They also talk about the lure of the private sector and the big money.

Oh, and they managed to get a bit of sexism claims in there. All in all, I believe they just did their job on this one in the wake of her trips abroad. I didn’t find it misleading at all.

And I hate the friggin’ N&O and have not had a subscription for years. Put your money where your mouth is, Nitz! and bring your shoes…

  3. No, the real story here is that NCSU got Mary Easley for $90k in the first place. That was a heck of a deal.

Her new salary is a nice bump, sure, but still not nearly what she could earn in private practice. And if she’s got new responsibilities then where’s the beef?

This is being played as an unwise use of tax dollars and I don’t necessarily see it that way. Its misleading, plain and simple.

  4. again, I don’t see them angling the story that way…I think you’re making it out to be more than it is.

Also, since you’re a news and computer geek why aren’t you just reading it online instead of paying for it? You could always print out the articles to read with your morning coffee…
