Highlights of 2004, Number 10

Blogs are a wonderful record of one’s life. This time of year, I like to review all the goings on and list the significant ones I’ve posted about. As I compiled this list, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to come up with ten. Instead, the real problem became what to leave out! The fact is I must have done something interesting because I’ve posted 723 items this year.

After much thought, I picked the top ten events. I’ll be posting each one as I get time, so you’ll have to follow along. I hope you enjoy them!

10. Teaching an Asterisk class. In June, I put all my fun tinkering with Asterisk into a class for TriLUG, the local Linux user group. While I expected some interest, the response overwhelmed me. Over thirty people showed up at 8 AM on a Saturday to hear me babble about Asterisk for four hours. Nearly every seat was filled. I was humbled!

The class was fun, the feedback was positive, and I felt great. The whole event became a major leap for me. This kid who once thrived in the back row learned he likes being front and center! The class gave me a lot of confidence in speaking to groups, and I learned a lot about myself because of it. I’ll probably teach many more classes, but none will have the impact on my confidence the way this one did.
