1. I don’t bike nearly as much as I used to, and need to do a lot more.

However, I really want to know how you “avoid a deer” and cross not *only* the middle line, but all the way to the other side of the road where the bicyclist is riding?

Having not seen the WRAL report, I’m only guessing here, but this sounds more like vehicular manslaughter than an “accident”.

  2. What do you think? Too much?

I was super-angry when writing that. I had a full-out argument with a driver on my morning ride that turned simmer into boil.

  3. I’ve been lucky so far not to tangle with drivers, either verbally or physically. In the months I’ve been biking, I’ve only had one person yell at me and I’m not sure it was in anger. It could’ve been a neighbor saying hi for all I know. Then again, I ride on wide streets (like Wilmington St) and always display a flashing red light on my bike.

Scott, I don’t think it was over the top. I think people need to hear from cyclists on this rather than the “knuckle-draggers,” so I’m glad you wrote it. I’d like to see cyclists “own” WRAL’s comment thread and try to educate these careless drivers. I think its important that people learn cyclists’ anger at being pushed around out there. Maybe it will sink in.

P.S. Thanks for the tip on RoadID. I ordered a bracelet this afternoon.

  4. Thanks.

Thing is, this flame war plays out every time there’s a bike-vs-car incident. Even the well wishers throw in a “I don’t mean to pass judgment” just before they pass judgment.

Unfortunately, it seems like “they” have already decided that they’re right, end of story. Like talking to a SUV.

  5. I don’t think it was over the top either. There’s a reason why the vast majority of my cycling is on singletrack in the woods: because people like that in their SUVs, talking on their cell phones, not paying attention scare the crap out of me. I didn’t know Clive either, but from what I hear he knew what he was doing. It really makes you sit back and think when something like this happens to someone like that (who knows his way around a bike).

Also couple that with the accident in Mexico this weekend and I’m really content to stay cycling in the woods. :-/
