Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay have the right of habeas corpus, just like everyone else. The ruling doesn’t mean they go free, or that they’re squeaky clean for that matter. It means that charges against them must be proven before they can be locked up forever.
I’ve never understood why Bush and Co. have been scared witless that they may actually have to come up with evidence against these poor men. Unless they knew there was no evidence to begin with, that is.
The Constitution is designed to limit the federal government’s power; its not meant to spell out the people’s rights. It doesn’t say “these rights apply only to citizens” because that doesn’t matter. Bush’s attempt to do an end-run around this fact and his contempt for the rule of law are reasons enough to kick his sorry ass out of office.
As I said before, a lot of those prisoners aren’t exactly Boy Scouts. That’s fine, but prove it in a court of law. That’s how we do things here, Sparky.
