I was all into the Independent Weekly’s look at Raleigh when I came to this story by Vernon Coleman, called Seeing the city through a conventioneer’s eyes: Wanderlust in Raleigh. Its the same old tired story of Durhamites looking down their noses at Raleigh. Coleman spends an afternoon wandering around downtown, asks advice from some homeless people, and assumes that since he is totally clueless that there’s nothing going on here. Moron.
Just when I think the Indy is finally on the Raleigh bandwagon they trot out tripe like this. I never thought I’d say I miss the Spectator.
Durhamites?!? Just where do you find Durhamites in that story? (Just because Indy is based in Durham?!?) The author simply states he’s new to NC and wants to find out more about Raleigh. There’s no need to put down Durham because you feel some slight. That happens more than enough from you Raleighides.
Coleman is a resident of Durham.
Not all Durhamites are that way, but the Indy has long seemed biased in favor of Durham, completely ignoring the way Raleigh’s changed in the past few years.
A pet peeve of mine. YMMV. 🙂
Well, as you may have noticed, the way that Durham routinely gets dissed by everyone else in the triangle is a pet peeve of mine.
And, out of curiosity, just how has Raleigh “changed”? Do you mean building new things (i.e. convention center) or attitudes? Because if it’s the later I haven’t seen it at all.
