Carry-On Baggage

I was looking through some files on my laptop today, searching for a presentation when I came across this photo I had saved a while ago. It’s a seldom-seen shot of the plane hitting the South Tower on Sept. 11, 2001. What stood out for me again is the bulge plainly visible under the starboard wing. That’s when I was reminded again that democracy is dead in America.

Boxcutters … ha.

Oh well. It sure was fun while it lasted.

  1. I heard someone say they got bumped up to 1st class a year ago and he ate with plasticware during the flight. This year, however, when he got a 1st class ticket, they served using metal utensils. What, other than our perceptions, has changed in the course of one year?

  2. That’s the problem: not much has changed in a year. My perceptions seemed to have changed, but the picture reminded me of the farce of a democracy we currently live in. I was starting to think again that everything is going to be all right, that America will right itself. Then I saw that ugly reminder.

In hindsight, I wrote that post during a lonely day at an out of town conference. The next day I decided that perhaps democracy isn’t dead: perhaps its just very ill. The last few months have given me hope, actually. I’m trusting they, too, aren’t just an illusion.
