I joined a Facebook group for Desert Storm Veterans a while back, fascinated by the old war photographs veterans were sharing. Lately, though, a few right wingers were posting trollop from Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, as if this was of interest to everyone. I was about to loudly complain to the group moderator or even considering leaving the group when I saw the moderator’s pinned post at the top of the page:
This is not a sales group anyone trying will be banned….This is also a Free Speech Zone and it will not be sensored [sic.]
Well if the wingnuts are going to post right-wing bullshit in the group then I’m going to counter it with some left-wing nuggets of truth. For every dumbshit post from World Net Daily I’ve been posting some liberal counterpoint.
Predictably, this has gotten the wingnuts howling. How dare I interrupt their right-wing fantasy by injecting some truthfulness? What a surprise that others don’t think like they do!
The kicker was this post, though:
Lee Shiry Who let this idiot mark Turner in the group? Seems like a liberal plant
A “liberal plant,” eh? Like there’s no way a veteran could be a liberal? Is this guy really that fucking stupid?
Really I wanted to push some buttons and see if I could introduce some jarring reality into the world of these close-minded jerks. I figure if that Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck must have their own Facebook pages, so anyone who wants to ought to be able to find those pages for themselves without working too hard.
I feel sorry for people who live their lives in a bubble, thinking that their way of thinking is the only way of thinking. That goes for all sides of the political spectrum. I am no fan of Obama but it pains me to see people saying stupid things and not honestly weigh what they’re saying against reality.
Sometimes it can be a challenge to sensor myself.
Update 6:08 AM: Late last night the group moderator banned all political posts in the group. Mission accomplished.
