I am such a geek when it comes to government. Listen to this: last week the thought actually crossed my mind that writing a book on the power of homeowners associations might be fun. The thought of a homeowners association essentially being a private government intrigues me. If city and county governments derive their power from the state, from where do homeowners associations derive theirs?
Fortunately, I don’t have to write the book because one has already been written: Privatopia: Homeowners Associations and the Rise of Residential Private Government by Evan McKenzie (no relation to my friend of the same name). Thanks to the magic of Wake County’s slick new Interliberry Loan website I have a copy on its way to me.
Nothing like a good tome about homeowners associations to keep me entertained. It will have to wait, though, until I learn more about this Butner pathogen lab by reading Lab 257 about the Plum Island, NY lab. Then I’ve got the Alfie Kohn book The Homework Myth : Why Our Kids Get Too Much to read.
If some ‘Mericans don’t read enough books a year, I might be one who reads too many!
