Cheap Thoughts: washers and dryers

Why is it that washers and dryers are lined up with the washer on the left and the dryer on the right? Who came up with this standard? And does it unfairly limit the lefties among us?

What if I wanted to build a house where the dryer was on the left. Could I do it? Or would I be breaking some kind of building code?

  1. You could go European and stack them 😉 I had never thought about this before, but that is an interesting question!

  2. I’ve never seen them set up like this that I can recall – every washroom I’ve had in an apt/house is dryer on left and washer on right

  3. The hookups for my washer & dryer at home put the dryer on the left and the washer on the right, but I had to swap the washer & dryer because our dryer door opens left to right and where it was positioned we couldn’t easily get to our dryer.

  4. could you not flip the door? several dryers i’ve seen allow you to swap the side it hinges on like refrigerators do

  5. I’m thinking that they are set up to allow for easy transfer between washer and dryer with the doors opening opposite ways. I believe my doors are fixed without an option to move them. (Sort of like Bush Republicans.)
