International TV

I’ve been enjoying my free-to-air satellite dish and the varied programming it brings in. I’ve got hundreds of channels of TV and radio, many from around the world.

Last week, I bought another dish that was posted on Craigslist. While my motorized dish can reach most satellites aimed at the United States, it’s not positioned to get the birds at the extreme end of the satellite arc. I needed another one.

Giving Turntable a spin

Friday gave me my first look at a new music service called Turntable. It’s a service where you and up to five of your friends can take turns DJ-ing a music channel (or “room”). Participants in the room can vote whether a song is “lame” or “awesome” and the vote determines whether the song stays in rotation. They can also share real-time comments in a chat window.

It’s an intriguing idea, but how does it work in practice? It works well if you like hiring schizophrenics to DJ your parties! There were some cool tunes I heard that I wouldn’t have otherwise been exposed to, but the music flow soon became a jumbled mess.

On the air with Rivendell

By LeRe Pics

My use of online music services like Pandora, Mondomix, TaintRadio.Org, and my recent voiceover dabbling has gotten me itching to start my own online radio station. Or reignite my itch, I should say: back in 1997 I became one of the first to apply to the Library of Congress for a compulsory license for Internet radio (back when the list of online radio stations would fit on just few pages). I never followed through with it because it was a leap of faith: the song royalty rates were not fixed and could have been enormous once they were.

Road Rage

I rediscovered this gem today.

Catatonia
Road Rage

If all you’ve got to do today is find peace of mind
Come round you can take a piece of mine
And if all you’ve got to do today is hesitate
Come here, you can leave it late with me

You could be taking it easy on yourself
You should be making it easy on yourself

Rush’s Greensboro show postponed

I found out today that the Rush show in Greensboro I was planning to see on Friday has been pushed back by a day. Apparently those wicked “unforseen circumstances” caught Live Nation off guard.

Look, I’m a busy guy. My wife is a busy woman. Even our kids are busy. We all planned for me to see this show months in advance, because that’s what it takes to coordinate all of our schedules. I know Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neal Peart are rock stars and putting on a tour takes a herculean effort, but I was really looking forward to taking a day off of work and driving with my brother to see them play.

Telling fans three days before the show that it’s been postponed is pretty stupid, in my book. Now I can’t go. This sucks.

Live Nation announced today that due to unforeseen circumstances the Rush performance previously scheduled for this Friday, April 1st in Greensboro has been postponed one day and will now take place on Saturday, April 2nd at the Greensboro Coliseum. Doors remain 6:30 pm with show time at 7:30 pm.

After much consideration, as the Toledo performance would have been the 4th show in 5 days the decision was made to delay the show rather than move forward as previously scheduled. The added time between shows will ensure that fans in Toledo are treated to the best performance that Rush can deliver. As a result, the Toledo performance previously scheduled for Wednesday, April 6th will be postponed one week and will now take place on Wednesday, April 13th at Huntington Center.

Tickets for both of the previously scheduled performance will be honored at the rescheduled dates. Fans requiring a refund may do so at point of purchase.

Cantiga Pa Pedra

I’m on a Mario Lucio kick now. This is a great album.

Pedra pedra
De parduero de obelisco de capela de pirâmide
De jade de xadrez de construçon de vulcon
De enxofre de sal de açucar de um pedrada
De Buda de moinho de mula faca e espada
De espuma de mar de algum lugar de lua
Fundamental divina filosofal preciosa
De Pedro de Sisifo de Jesus de Madalena
Esculpido lascado polido rolado
Ngabado sustedo ncunhado perto de ncunhal
Na sapato na bolso na mon
Riba cabeça
De alicerce
De pula e salta de brinca e trinca
De pedra pardo pa arde
parte
Perto prata pedra ingrata
Chã de Pedra
Pedra contra pedra
Que pena Pedra empena cristal de agua

Abraham Inc. brings the klezmer funk

C_Rays_Walz, Me, and David_Krakhauer

As I tweeted earlier, it’s almost not fair that it’s still January and tonight I saw the best show I’ll see all year. Abraham Inc. absolutely rocked NCSU’s Stewart Theatre tonight. I had high expectations for this show and damned if Abe Inc. didn’t just live up to them, they blew them out of the water.

After the show, the band stuck around and signed autographs. Impressed with the welcome the band got in Raleigh, keyboardist (and beat maestro) Socalled joked “From now on we’re just going to play in the South!”

If you haven’t heard Abraham Inc.’s crazy mix of hip-hop, klezmer, and funk you’ve got to check them out. I sure hope they play here again soon!

The Cap’m

I love the looped audience track in this song.

They Might Be Giants

Do you think there’s somebody out there
Someone else who’s better than the one you’ve got?
Well there’s not, there’s not

When I talk you keep looking away from me
‘Cause you probably think that I’m high on pot
But I’m not, I’m not
