Thirty-Nine and Holding

Travis loves his Jerry Lee Lewis, The Definitive Collection CD, to the point that its beginning to drive us all crazy. He plays it literally all day long, all the time. It’s cute and yet maddening.

This morning he’s chosen to play Jerry Lee’s Thirty-Nine And Holding on repeat. The amusing thing is that Travis has no idea of its significance this morning. Just a happy accident. Or torture, depending on your point of view.

As I post this he just switched gears to another song. That makes about 15 times in a row for “Thirty-Nine and Holding.”

(As for me, while my 30s were great, I’m fully ready for my 40s!)

Yet another update on jazz musician Mark Turner

I had a dream last night that I cut my fingers off. In my dream, reattaching them was as easy as sticking them back on my hand. Not so for jazz musician Mark Turner, who cut his fingers for real back in November.

Here’s an update from Aaron Parks on Mark’s fingers:

Good News (update on Mark Turner)

Some very encouraging news regarding Mark Turner and his injury. It’s looking like his recuperation is going much faster than anticipated, and he may be back to playing gigs again sometime in the next couple of months. Much better than the six months of recovery time that was initially expected. Let’s all wish him continued healing through the rest of 2008 and into 2009…

Get well, Mark!

Well Jolene unlocked the thick, breezeway door,
Like she’d done one hundred times before.
Jolene smoothed her dark hair in the mirror.
She folded the towel carefully and put it back in place.

Yeah I want to pull you down into bed.
I want to cast your face in lead.
Well every time I pull you close,
Push my face into your hair,
Cream rinse and tobacco smoke,
That sickly scent is always, always there.

The Byrne Identity

I thought there would be at least one David Byrne sighting when he played in Raleigh yesterday and I was right. N&O music guru David Menconi gave Byrne directions to the Raleigh Times yesterday, where Byrne ordered a salad. No word on whether Byrne brought his bike with him.

While I would’ve been thrilled to meet him, I certainly couldn’t afford the $47 ticket price, especially after my concerns in mid-October about the economy came personally, painfully true. Still it would’ve been interesting to meet a talented, unassuming, veteran rock star like Byrne up close.

Update on musician Mark Turner

Aaron Parks posted an update over the weekend about jazz musician Mark Turner’s progress in healing from his recent finger injuries:

Hi everyone,

I know many of you have been asking for more news about Mark’s condition. Out of respect for the privacy of him and his family during this difficult time, I’ve been a bit reluctant to make any more posts about it. Also, there’s a lot of people who have known him for much longer than me and would probably be better chosen for the job of keeping people informed. At this point, though, it seems that this blog has become the primary source for information about what happened, and therefore, it’s the place many people are coming to for information about ways that they can help. It’s with this in mind that I’m writing this post tonight.

Update on jazz musician Mark Turner

Aaron Parks passes along info that jazz musician Mark Turner’s hand surgery went as well as could be hoped for:

Hey everyone,

The show of support for Mark over the last few days has been incredible. Please keep the positivity flowing in.

A lot of people have been asking for an update, so I wanted to pass along the little bit of information that I know. The surgery was this morning, with one of the best hand surgeons in the country, and it apparently went as well as could be hoped for. It’ll take some time to know whether the procedure will ultimately be successful in restoring the full use of his hand, but everyone is hoping for the best. Mark is, of course, inspiringly Zen about the whole thing, already accepting things however they turn out. We’ll just have to wait: time will tell, I guess.

In the meantime, keep all the support coming. Many people have asked if there’s a way they could help financially, since he’s basically lost his main source of income for the next 6 months at least. I’ll look into it to see if he’s receptive to that kind of thing. Will let you know.

Thanks again for all the love you’ve shown towards him and his family…

Again, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

[Update 19 Jan 2009]: Good news! Mark’s apparently healing well.

Another Mark Turner cuts his fingers

I see from my recent incoming Google searches that another Mark Turner (the jazz musician, I believe) has apparently severely injured two of his fingers with a power saw.

According to his friend and fellow musician Aaron Parks:

I’m afraid I have some sobering news to share, though, about one of my friends, someone who is an inspiration to countless musicians, a true genius, and a beautiful spirit: Mark Turner.

A few minutes ago, I received a text message from Kurt Rosenwinkel informing me that Mark severely cut two of his fingers with a power saw, and is in the hospital awaiting surgery tomorrow morning. They will be trying to reattach nerves, tendons, and arteries. With luck, the surgery will be successful, and he will eventually regain the use of his injured fingers. It’ll be no less than 6 months of rehab, though.

Sleepwalker

As if I didn’t have enough reason to love this band. Did you know Jim’s Big Ego’s music is Creative Commons licensed?

Jim’s Big Ego is almost certainly the greatest band in the history of recorded music.
