Warm wet winter gives rise to skeeters

I was out playing with Travis this evening when I found myself swatting at mosquitoes. The warm, wet winter we’ve had has been a boon to the bloodsucking critters.

It’s also been a boon to bats. I saw three of them merrily circling our house at dusk, gobbling up as many mosquitoes as they could. You go, bats!

Awesome road crews

I take my hat off to the incredible street crews who labored throughout the night to keep our roads open. Thanks to their Herculean efforts there wasn’t one bit of snow or ice on our city streets.

I’d especially like to thank them for going the extra mile by clearing the snow and ice from my neighborhood, yard, house, and all visible surfaces – and doing so before the sun came up. Fantastic job, guys!

Weather closings

There are a few inches of snow in the overnight forecast and it brought up an amusing memory for Kelly tonight. She remarked at how simple it is nowadays to find out about weather closings.

It’s true. When we were kids and it snowed we were glued to the TV, waiting for an eternity for the name of our school system to flash on the screen. Now, it’s just a few simple clicks on the Web.

Of course, putting weather closings on the web raises some concerns, too. You know how we do.

Barbecued

I joined the family for a birthday barbecue lunch today at The Pit. Man, was it good.

Thank you, Snow Day, for making it possible.

Snowbama

Snowbama. That’s what area folks are calling yesterday’s snow-and-inauguration mashup.

I thought the inauguration was fitting, and was glad Prez O didn’t promise the moon and the stars. I was also thrilled to see that he and Michelle hopped out of their limo to walk the parade route, a la Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. One of the first signs of problems with George W. Bush’s term for me was the tank of a Cadillac he rode in during his inauguration. While admittedly Bush likely didn’t have any say about the car, something about that rubbed me the wrong way.

Anyway, time for Prez O to get to work. And what a daunting job it is.

Two (no, five!) inches of snow

Looks like we’ve gotten two inches of snow this morning, with plenty more still falling. Beautiful and peaceful, it is.

I’ll be at home today, methinks.

[Update: 8:40 AM] The initial snow was more like three inches. And its still falling!

[Update: 2:00 PM] The official measurement at MT.Net is a total of 5 inches of snow.

Snow kidding

The current weather forecast calls for about 3″ of snow tomorrow, though depending on where things converge it could be less or much more. Fortunately, by coincidence we stocked up on our white goods yesterday, when we were still oblivious to the coming storm. Should things get messy tomorrow I’m staying put. With the vpn into work I can still be productive.

It was exactly four years ago when we got an inch of snow and all hell broke loose in Raleigh. That inch of snow wreaked more havoc than the 20″ we got in January 2000. Let’s hope this won’t be a repeat.

No lack of rain this year

What a difference a year makes. Today our back yard is saturated – the steady rains we’ve had recently have dumped so much water on us that it has nowhere to go. We had a small stream in our backyard after last night’s rain.

Contrast this with how things looked last year, when we were in the midst of a serious drought and Falls Lake stood ten feet below normal. It was Christmas 2007 when Falls Lake fell to its lowest point ever.

The big difference was the month of September [PDF], when we got almost five inches more of rain than normal! That actually turned our rain deficit from Jan 2007 into a surplus of almost 2 inches! November and December should push the totals up even more.

There are still other parts of the state still suffering from drought, particularly the mountain areas. I hope they get some good snow in the coming winter months.

A mange in a wager . . .

Christmas is next week and I was just comfortably standing outside wearing shorts. Ah, North Carolina winters are so unpredictable.

(Title means nothing other than the songs of the season eventually run together in my head)
