Hurricane Fran, 11 years ago

I thought today’s date looked familiar. Today’s the anniversary of the morning after Hurricane Fran came ashore. For some like me, the night it came ashore and the following day blended together, as I didn’t get much sleep after a tree came to rest 3 feet away from my once-sleeping head.

(I blather about this every year, don’t I? A sign of geezerhood?)

There’s a weak storm churning off of Wilmington now which hopefully will bring rain to the parched state. Let’s hope it stays weak, but brings the rain.

New Hope Valley

We’re on our way to the New Hope Valley Railway this morning to ride the train, since its the first Sunday of the month. Kelly will stay here and get some of her new editing project done.

The weather this morning is fall-like, the first cool morning in recent memory. It should be a fine time to ride a train through the dry, dying woods!

Rain!

We got rain this afternoon. I was practically dancing, though I’m kicking myself for not already hooking up the water tank I recently bought.

The MT.Net weather station says close to an inch of rain fell. Its a drop in the bucket, drought-wise, but every little bit helps.

Rain?

It’s been drizzly ever since I arrived in Philadelphia. Around the time we were done at the client site it began to really rain. I packed for drought and blazing heat, not for heavy rain and 65 degrees!

Luckily a street vendor sells umbrellas not far from the hotel. I’ll wait for a break in the weather and hope to catch him before he vanishes.

Drop Everything for a Drop

I had to leave my desktop and run outside because I heard a sound we haven’t heard in a while: thunder! The radar shows a nice fat, red blob headed for our house. Hurray! A moment ago the weather radio’s alarm began sounding, reporting the thunderstorm. Music to my ears!

How sad is it that I get giddy from the mere possibility of rain?

Holy Moly – 113 Degrees!

I just placed another digital thermometer on the south side of my house. It just registered 113 degrees! This while my weather station reads 112. Its obviously in the shade.

It really is that hot outside! No wonder my long-suffering lawn is dying (and my home AC is struggling).

High Temperatures (Mostly) Accurate?

Yesterday I put another thermometer beside my home weather station’s. In midafternoon it recorded a temperature of 104 degrees F, hours after my weather station clocked 110.7 F. As I said, I think my station’s temperatures run a bit hot, but they aren’t too far off the mark. I think the other thermometer proves my theory that this location is simply hotter than RDU airport.

MT.Net Sets New High Temperature Record

My home weather station set a new high temperature record today, showing 110.7 degrees F at 1PM today. The previous high was 104, so this is quite hotter. Granted, my temperatures are a little skewed since the thermometer is close to our brick foundation on the southern side of the house (though it is shaded), but they aren’t much skewed. I just think the area we’re in is hotter in general than the airport (though surely not by 11 degrees).

Meanwhile out in the San Juan Islands, the folks out there are sweating through their flannel as the temperatures top out at 57 degrees F. I feel for ’em, you know? It’s hard out there for an islander.

Weather Plotting Added

I added some graphs from my weather station as I continue to put things together.

You can see a nice graphical summary of the day’s observations by clicking here.
