Hours before last night’s Zenoss presentation at TriLUG, a friend offered me a ticket to the Canes game happening at the same time.
I should’ve taken the ticket. My demo was anything but impressive as my laptop’s VMWare session blew chunks in the middle of demonstrating Zenoss. I hope folks got something from the talk but it was certainly not my best presentation. Luckily, the Zenoss project succeeds wildly in spite of my meager attempts to show it off.
W00t! Raleigh’s Big Boss Brewing company will be offering a free tour of their downtown Raleigh brewery this Saturday. The tour starts at 2PM and the beer is on the house.
I’ve gone on brewery tours at Apex’s Carolina Brewing Company (back when they gave them, anyway) and had a great time. This one should be fun too. Just make sure you arrange for a ride home if you get carried away!
I’ll be presenting Zenoss Core at tonight’s TriLUG meeting at Red Hat’s Raleigh offices. The meeting begins at 7PM and features free pizza (which Zenoss is sponsoring) followed by an hour-long talk about the Zenoss network management software.

Santa brought me a Sirius satellite radio kit for my car. While I’m enjoying the tunes, I’m finding that I already own most of them. Also, working from home the way I do, I am not in the car all that much to enjoy my music.

I just found out about Maryland’s recently-enacted Computer Services tax, as my employer is based in Maryland. Maryland’s new law, which takes effect July 1st, will tax computer services at 6%. Connecticut, the only state to successfully tax computer services, does so at 1%.

The U.S. Navy released video showing unidentified speedboats closing in on Navy ships. While the speedboat’s movements are certainly provocative and the Iranian claims that the video was fabricated are clearly preposterous, the voice on the radio saying “I am coming at you. You will explode in a few minutes” deserves some scrutiny.

Ah, this brings back memories of my all-too-brief time on campus at N.C. State. With all the rocket scientists the university produces, you’d think one of them could solve this problem.
Just caught on to Freecycle after hearing our friends had great success using it in the DC area. Freecycle is like Craigslist but for stuff you want to give away. Its all about free (thus the name, duh).
Wake County has its own Freecycle group with 6,036 members. Orange County has 1,904 members and Durham has 2,312. Looks like a good place to get some bargains and give away some stuff.
Mayor Charles Meeker held a press conference today to urge everyone to limit their water use to 25 gallons per person. Almost on cue, the comments on WRAL’s website went through the roof, with 361 posted as of this writing. Its as if people are just waking up to the fact that, oh, FALLS LAKE IS JUST A MUDDY HOLE NOW!!!

I bagged my first mosquito of 2008 tonight as it slipped in the back door behind me. Seems a bit early to be dealing with them, but with high temperatures in the 70s its more like spring out there than the first week of January.
