I did a little more poking around on the car warranty scam today after a woman wrote me asking for more information. My blog posts had shown up on Internet searches of the phone number so I decided to see what other people had reported on 800notes.com on the number.

Lance Armstrong ran this year’s New York City Marathon, finishing in 2:46:23 and becoming the 698th runner to cross the finish line.
Imagine what it must have been like finishing in 697th place, just ahead of Lance. I’d have been tempted to turn around and taunt him: “In your face, Armstrong!”
It would be about the only chance you’d get to do that.
Raleigh’s own laugh factory, ComedyWorx, is holding a special fundraiser tonight for The Children’s House of Raleigh, a Montessori-based school MT.Net readers know is dear to my heart. ComedyWorx is an improv comedy group along the lines of Whose Line is it Anyway? but funnier because Wade is in it.
The show starts at 7 PM and the tickets are $20 (tax-deductible as they go to support the school). Come out and enjoy some industrial-strength laughs tonight. Do it for the children!
We learned last week that Kelly’s cousin’s husband Jim’s (got that?) band Romantica would be playing the Pour House last night, and so they did. Kelly and Scott got to see ’em while I hung out here with the kids.
After the show, both Romantica and the band they’re touring with, Mando Saenz, crashed here. Six sleeping musicians were scattered around the house when we started our day! Everyone was really cool, though. Its a shame they couldn’t stay longer.
They gave us a few CDs that I’ll listen to today. And next time they play here I’ll be the one who goes to the show!
Remember the Tuscany Industries car warranty telephone scam I’ve been following? They’ve now calling from a CallerID claiming to be Alpha Service with the number 702-520-1274, and leaving the toll-free number 877-700-5880. Once again, the pitch is to “extend your car’s warranty.” An MT.Net reader claims these calls originate from Great Atlantic Warranty of South Florida. Wouldn’t surprise me.
If you get calls from these clowns, please report your call at 800notes.com under the appropriate number. And, please, don’t reward these crooks with your money!
After watching the inevitable train movie for the kids this morning, I found a handy list of steam locomotives in NC.
Did you know a locomotive was buried in 1933 under an intersection in Garysburg, NC? That must drive the old guys with metal detectors crazy.
We went sailing again Saturday with the intent of taking the boat out of the water once we were done. Although we had a great time sailing, with steady winds and the lake to ourselves, the minivan failed to pull the boat up the ramp. Without a four wheel drive we’ll have to either use another vehicle or use another ramp.
We put the boat back in the water and will try again another weekend.
I noticed that Google Earth’s satellite imagery of Raleigh has been recently updated. Its actually showing imagery taken this year. I note that trees are green, traffic is moving on the Knightdale segment of I-540, and Falls Lake is full so I’m assuming the pic was taken in late spring. I’m also feeling embarrassed to have the greenest yard in the neighborhood, which is a switch for me: I was probably pretty darn proud at the time.
The spring and summer seasons are a terrible time for satellite imagery as the goal is normally to capture the details hidden by the foliage. Still its good to see somewhat recent pictures.
Make Magazine’s blog linked to an amusing story on famous physicist Richard Fenyman’s experiments with ants. LanBo, the distributor of the gel-based ant farms, posted the Fenyman nuggets on its website.
Hallie has one of these ant farms on our kitchen counter. I hope she’s half as curious about ants as Fenyman was!
