Ann Turner, 1911-2004

I’ve been very busy at work the past few weeks, running a technical support and technical sales department. I’m on the phone constantly. Since the holidays are around the corner, I stepped up and organized a holiday dinner for the company.

It was in the midst of all this chaos that I snuck away from my desk and made a phone call. My 93-year-old grandmother was in the hospital with a broken leg and my dad suggested we give her a call.

I called Wednesday afternoon around 2 PM. My Aunt Nancy jovially answered the phone. From the sound of her voice, it sounded like a party was going on. We chatted a moment and then she handed the phone over to Grandma.

“So, the new career as a stuntwoman isn’t working out, huh,” I said.

“What’s that?” she answered. I caught her off guard.

“You know, jumping off of houses and stuff. I told you it wasn’t a good idea,” I teased. She chuckled.

She had fallen in the kitchen a few days ago, had just had a pin put in her leg, and already she had done a bit of walking on it. I told her I was impressed.

I asked how she was holding up.

“Oh, doing okay for 93.” And she was. She sounded great.

“So tell me about your routine there.”

“Well,” she began. “I sleep in the morning until they wake me up. I eat breakfast and then sleep until lunchtime, when they wake me up. I eat and sleep again. It’s the life of Riley.” It was good to hear she still had her sense of humor.

I asked about the rehab she was facing. “Oh, I don’t know anything about that. You’ll have to ask Nancy or someone.”

Good, I thought. In this case at least, ignorance is definitely bliss. Rehab for a broken leg is no picnic. It is daunting for everyone, not just thouse of us lucky enough to be 93.

I wished her a speedy recovery and let her know we were thinking about her. She said to say hello to my family. After exchanging “I love yous,” I hung up. The timer on my phone read five minutes.

It was the first time I could ever remember her being in the hospital. It was also her last. This incredibly strong and loved woman checked herself out, passing away peacefully in the night.

Good for her, I thought as my mom broke the news to me this morning.

Half of Florida will likely be at her funeral on Sunday. We’ll be there, too, paying respects to a wonderful woman.

Thanks for everything, Grandma. We love you and miss you.

Drawing up some fun

I had an insight I had while doing yard work on Saturday. I was out leaf-blowing when a picture popped into my head of Snoopy holding a leafblower. An entire completed comic strip arranged itself in my mind as I worked. I felt like I could be Charles Schulz.

I thought about the fun I had drawing and sketching, starting in middle school and continuing into my twenties. It’s a shame I haven’t found more time to doodle and draw.

I made another connection, too, and that’s that blogging and drawing a comic strip have a lot in common. They both exercise your ability to come up with something to say. With a moment or two of inspiration like the kind I got out noodling around the yard, I could bring characters to life on paper. Or on the Internet, a la Dr. Fun.

Maybe I’ll add to my Christmas list a graphics tablet. And also give myself the gift of more time to draw.

Sniffly Kid

Travis has a cold now. It’s been a day or so. His pifitul sniffling and achy-looking faces are tough to experience. I really feel for the Big Guy. Hopefully, he’ll get better soon.

The good news is Hallie is over her cold, and Kelly’s bronchitis is waning, too. We’ve got one sick family member now and three healthy ones, so things are improving.

Nephew On The Way

My brother Jeff and his wife found out the gender of their upcoming baby. It turns out they have a Tiny Elvis on the way. I just had a feeling it was a boy, and said so from the very start.

It’ll be fun to watch how he and his cousin Travis get along. Exciting news, y’all!

Sweet Sixteen

I was thinking of Coral Castle this morning and was reminded that Billy Idol wrote a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it goes!

Trains and Travis

We put some pics up of today’s trip to the Railway, including this nice shot of us hanging with Santa.

Later today, as I was about to do some yard work, Kelly suggested I stick around a bit longer, as Travis seemed to be trying out his facial muscles. It turned out to be a golden opportunity to capture his fleeting smile for the masses. Check out this adorable picture and the rest on the gallery page.

(And, yes, for the record, he is smiling at his mother, not the guy in the snappy new green baseball cap.)

Choo Choo

Hallie and I are off to the New Hope Valley Railway to ride their holiday train. Kelly and Travis will pick up our new coffee table. We’ll all meet back for lunch.

All aboard!
